A Montgomery County District Court judge found Lynda Carter Altman not guilty last week of the municipal infraction.

The acting Montgomery County attorney says his office took the issue to court after an animal services officer issued a barking dog citation based on Petropoulos’ complaint. Altman’s attorney the case was dismissed because there wasn’t sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

Solar-powered Swiss plane gets its day in the – Co 7月 8, 2010 No Comments
As the sun set, technicians hoped the Solar Impulse’s batteries — charged from the 12,000 solar cells fixed to the wings and body — would keep the four-engine plane engines airborne through the night. The batteries would begin charging again at dawn.
The team of adventurers and engineers behind the Solar Impulse project are already celebrating an aviation milestone for the longest solar flight after keeping the single-seat prototype aloft for almost 15 hours.
Borschberg took off from Payerne airfield into the clear blue sky shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, allowing the plane to soak up plenty of sunshine and fly in gentle loops over the Jura mountains west of the Swiss Alps.
But with the goal of 24 hours of nonstop flight, the team set its sights on keeping the sleek aircraft with a 207-foot (63-meter) wingspan in the air until Thursday morning.
Piccard said the test flight — the third major step after its first “flea hop” and an extended flight earlier this year — will demonstrate whether the round-the-world trip is feasible.
Earlier in the afternoon, Piccard told The Associated Press the flight was going “extremely well.”
“The goal of the project is to have a solar-powered plane flying day and night without fuel,” he said. “This flight is crucial for the credibility of the project.”
Borschberg was circling in Swiss airspace, first at 28,000 feet (8,535 meters) and then gently easing down through the night — always within gliding range of Payerne airport, so he can land if the plane runs out of energy, Piccard said. Still, the 57-year-old former Swiss fighter pilot is wearing a parachute — just in case.
A record-breaking balloonist whose father and grandfather also accomplished pioneering airborne and submarine feats, Piccard has become the figurehead for the project and will be one of two pilots when it eventually takes off for its round-the-world attempt in 2013, with a scheduled five stops along the way.
GENEVA – An experimental solar-powered plane whose Swiss makers hope someday to fly around the globe soared into uncharted territory Wednesday — the cold, dark night.
Piccard said the night flight was a key step toward achieving that ultimate feat.
“If there is one hour missing tomorrow morning, it will be that hour,” he said.
Should Borschberg or the team decide that it looks like the Solar Impulse won’t make it through the night, the pilot will have the difficult task of landing the fragile aircraft before the batteries run out.
Pilot Andre Borschberg “will stay up there as long as possible,” said Bertrand Piccard, the project’s co-founder.
At 9:30 p.m., Piccard told reporters that strong winds had pushed the plane off course, cutting the safety margin by one hour.
Engineers in Payerne are closely monitoring every aspect of the aircraft, which has a thin fuselage and a wingspan of a Boeing 777 passenger jet. Its top speed is only 75 mph (120 kph) and it has no room for passengers or baggage, so it is as light and efficient as possible.
The team had hoped to make its 24-hour test flight last week, when days in the northern hemisphere were even longer. But a problem with a key piece of communications equipment forced them to ground the plane while modifications were made.
Piccard, who achieved the first nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in a balloon,Coach, the Breitling Orbiter III, in 1999,Juicy Couture tracksuits, said the next major step will be a solar Atlantic crossing. That will be done in a second, lighter prototype, because it will involve new challenges and dangers, he said.
Although the goal is to show that emissions-free air travel is possible, the team said it doesn’t see solar technology replacing conventional jet propulsion any time soon. Instead, the project is designed to test and promote new energy-efficient technologies.
“Solar Impulse is a message as much as an airplane,” he said.

NY’s top court upholds Columbia e – Ed hardy t-shi 7月 6, 2010 No Comments
Empire State spokesman Warner Johnston said that the court confirmed the project complies with the law and that the acquisition of holdout properties is essential. It will “enhance the vitality” of both the university and the neighborhood and result in 14,000 construction jobs over 25 years and 6,000 university positions, he said.
She noted that the initial blight study was done by consultants who had previously done similar work for Columbia, but that a second study was done by a firm with no such affiliation.
Bollinger said that the university has been constrained for space and that it is “just not true” it they acquired buildings purposely to let them fall into disrepair.
Three businesses in the project zone sued. They claimed collusion between the school and state agency, arguing that findings of blight were based on vermin, garbage and mold in buildings Columbia owned. Attorney Normal Siegel argued the university should not be rewarded for that with the forced sale of others’ property.
Smith disagreed with the majority’s broad conclusion about what constitutes a “civic project,” saying that the court didn’t need to address that question in this case and that constitutional constraints require a narrower reading.
The argument that the Empire State Development Corp. “acted in ‘bad faith’ or pretextually is unsubstantiated by the record,” Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick wrote,Ed hardy t-shirts, reversing the decision of a midlevel court.
School President Lee Bollinger said Thursday the project could take three to five decades to complete, though buildings should go up in the next four or five years in the first stage, including a new center for studying the brain, which will be affiliated also with the medical school farther uptown.
Siegel said he expects his clients to seek a review by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“We respectfully disagree with the reasons, the analysis and the conclusion,” he said. “At minimum this should be a wakeup call for the people in New York regarding the abuse of eminent domain. It calls out for major legislative reform.”
“Indeed, the advancement of higher education is the quintessential example of a ‘civic purpose,’” Ciparick wrote.
ALBANY, N.Y. – New York’s top court on Thursday upheld a state redevelopment agency’s use of eminent domain so Columbia University can expand its Ivy League campus over 17 acres in West Harlem.
The court majority likewise upheld Empire State’s finding that the private, not-for-profit institution’s expansion constituted a “civic project,” noting that the economic development statute doesn’t limit appropriate educational projects to public schools and universities.
The Court of Appeals said there was a rational basis for the Empire State Development Corp.’s findings that the area is blighted and Columbia’s expansion constitutes a land use improvement project.
Columbia’s proposed project, estimated in 2007 at $6.3 billion, includes up to 16 new buildings for housing, laboratories and other facilities, two acres of public open space, and tree-lined sidewalks. The university already owns most of the land in the largely commercial area.
Ciparick, joined by five other judges, also dismissed Siegel’s arguments that the statutory definition of blight as a “substandard or insanitary area” was unconstitutionally vague.
“Not only has this court, but the Supreme Court has consistently held that blight is an elastic concept that does not call for an inflexible one-size-fits-all definition,NFL Jerseys,” she wrote.
In a concurring opinion, Judge Robert Smith wrote that the blight finding seemed “strained and pretextual,” but no more so than in the recent Atlantic Yards case, in which the court majority upheld the use of eminent domain for a private developer’s Brooklyn project that includes a new NBA arena.
‘Genius grant’ helps Carter fulfill music – Roca W 7月 4, 2010 No Comments
http://www.reginacarter.com/
Carter talked recently about the album, which features violin, accordion and the traditional West African 21-stringed kora.
“I took a chance putting these instruments together for this project, not knowing if it was going to work,Roca Wear,” says Carter of the resulting 12 tracks on her recently released CD,MLB Jerseys, “Reverse Threads.”
AP: As you were discovering these songs and compositions, which story surprised you the most?
Then came along the MacArthur Foundation, which bestowed on her its prestigious $500,000 fellowship, known as the “genius grant.” Carter spent some of the money taking an introductory course on music therapy, and then spent some following her intuition.
Carter: I think the two tunes I recorded, “Hiwumbe Awumba” and “Mwana Talitambula.” Reading that they were from the Ugandan Jews and I had no idea that there were Jewish people in Uganda … It’s pretty amazing what I’ve started to learn just by researching music, the history that sometimes goes along with some of these pieces.
AP: How’s working with your husband (percussionist Alvester Garnett)?
Online:
Carter: These melodies when you listen to them, they sound very simple, but when you try to play them, you find that sometimes the simplest sounding things are the most difficult things to play. And having the technique and coming from a jazz world and being so used to improvising and using that language, sometimes it was too much. It was too many decorations, if you will, on the music, so I had to stop myself and really strip it away and let the beauty of these melodies really speak for themselves.
The unrestricted grant allowed her to spend three years independently researching and recording African folk songs, combining instruments and melodies she only had a feeling might coalesce into something substantive.
Carter: Working with my husband is really great. We figured out how it was going to work for us. I’m the boss of course – all the time. And he always tells me, ‘Well, she’s the boss two times over.’ On the road, we don’t share rooms, because when we’re working together, he’s my drummer and I’m the violinist we’re ban mates then. And it helps to keep it so there’s no favoritism, we’re all on equal footing. There’s no weird dynamic. And then when we get home, that dynamic, I had to learn. We both did — how to make that shift into being husband and wife.
___
NEW YORK – Classically trained jazz violinist Regina Carter wanted to go beyond the boundaries of Western music, but couldn’t find a record label willing to partner up on the adventure.
The Associated Press: It sounds like there are all kinds of musical influences on this African-influenced CD.
AP: What was most challenging thing about making this album?
Carter: It’s a huge continent first of all, Africa is, and so there’s so many different cultures and so many different styles of music. Sometimes I would hear something and say, “Oh wow, that sounds like Irish music” … I’d started to see within the research how much we influence — you know from traveling — how much the planet and how much we’re all influenced through music or art, and how much we’re connected all over the planet.
