Chinese miner says VP detained after toxic spil - 7月 29, 2010 No Comments

The June 3 leak into the Ting River in Fujian province on China’s southeast coast killed fish and fouled drinking water for 60,BBC,000 people. The waste flowed into crowded Guangdong province, which abuts Hong Kong.

Zijin has publicly apologized and acknowledged a waste pond at the mine was improperly built and operated, which led to the accident.

BEIJING – A major Chinese mining company said Thursday that one of its vice presidents has been detained by police in connection with a spill of copper mine waste that poisoned a river near the country’s southeast coast.

Zijin Mining Group received notice Wednesday that Chen Jiahong was detained “as a suspect in relation to the major pollution accident,Ed hardy hoodies,” the company said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange. It gave no other details.

The facility’s manager, deputy manager and environmental protection officer were detained earlier. The chief county environmental official resigned.

Vatican to Show Matisse in the House Mic – Fred pe 7月 25, 2010 No Comments

VATICAN CITY – Suddenly, the world has gone mad for Matisse. With the help of the Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA has assembled a sizable exhibition of the French artist’s early work, earning a five-star review from Time Out New York critic Howard Halle and an admission from New Yorker critic Peter Schjeldahl that the artist’s "Piano Lesson" makes (1916) "makes me feel like a little boy again." Now the Vatican Museums in Rome are set to open an entire room devoted to his works as part of the institution's drive to modernize its engagement with art.

While, as the Art Newspaper notes, the papal museums have long shown modern works from its collection — including pieces by Chagall,Fred perry, Leger, Bacon,Citizens of Humanity, and Gauguin — the church has in recent years been attempting to reinvigorate its influence on the artistic concerns of its time. Last year the pope invited 260 artists to convene in the Sistine Chapel to discuss notions of beauty, and the Holy See has even announced that it will establish a pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011.

On display in the space will be Matisse’s "Stations of the Cross," a three-drawing work that the artist labored on between 1948 and 1951, completing it three years before his death, according to the Art Newspaper. The pieces, which measure almost 50 feet tall, were made as preparatory sketches for a stained-glass composition depicting the tree of life, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus that was later installed in a Dominican chapel in Vence, France. The triptych is currently undergoing preservation work to remove glue that was used to affix the drawings to support panels before Mattise’s son Pierre, the star of "The Piano Lesson," donated them to the Vatican in 1980.

Education inventors get boost u – Abercrombie jack 7月 24, 2010 No Comments

The top prize went to Digital Proctor, which creators say can identify typists through keystroke biometrics and thereby make it easier for teachers to root out test fraud. Digital Proctor beat out competitors from 27 states and three countries to win $25,000.

“If they can figure out a way to bridge those two communities, it could be a real contribution,” said Smith, now CEO of Bellwether Education Partners.

“The shift toward evidence as the currency for education … will make it a much more rational market,” Shelton said. “It will be much easier for entrepreneurs to prove that what they have is what people should be spending time and money on.”

Arizona State University is also embracing the emerging field. It held its first education entrepreneur summit last spring and has started discussions with Penn for some kind of partnership, said Julia Rosen, associate vice president for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Arizona State’s business incubator, SkySong, has all types of companies but is intensifying its focus on education businesses because of the “incredible market potential,” Rosen said.

“Individual consumers are increasingly willing to pay for education, whether it’s lifelong learning,Abercrombie jackets, private schools, tutoring (or) test prep,” she said. “We think education is going to be the next health care.”

Despite constant talk of making U.S. students more competitive, Lynch said it can be nearly impossible to introduce a new product in the fractured K-12 market because of frequent changes in superintendents, policy and curricula. Each of the nation’s 15,000 school districts has its own needs and often cumbersome purchasing process.

There are other roadblocks.

In an interview, Digital Proctor CEO Shaun Sims said investors’ lack of familiarity with the education industry means entrepreneurs must make a double pitch: first on the market overall, then on the actual product they’ve developed.

Jim Shelton, assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement, said it is easier than ever for schools to use new ideas and products because of increasing Internet connectivity, cheaper technology and the growing use of hard data to measure outcomes.

“You’re going to get the country’s best talent working in this market instead of going to Silicon Valley working on the next social network,” Sims said.

Penn,Juicy Couture tracksuits, an Ivy League university in Philadelphia, has already held two summits on education entrepreneurship and hosted its first business plan competition, sponsored by the school and the Milken Family Foundation.

“It’s worse than trying to sell to the U.S. Army, in terms of the hoops you have to jump through,” Lynch said.

K-12 schools and degree-granting institutions spend more than $1 trillion on education annually, federal statistics show. That represents immense potential for entrepreneurs — if they can resist the lure of more established tech firms and trendier ventures like social networks.

The incubator he envisions at Penn — called NEST, for Networking Ed entrepreneurs for Social Transformation — would identify promising businesses and give them financial and logistical support, such as access to capital, work space and university expertise.

An educator at the University of Pennsylvania wants to create one of the nation’s only business incubators dedicated to education entrepreneurs. The U.S. Department of Education is also getting into the act with a $650 million fund to boost education innovation.

Linking educational researchers, who tend to be theoretical, with entrepreneurs, who are more practical and action-oriented, could help unlock the market, said Kim Smith, co-founder of the NewSchools Venture Fund, which invests in education businesses.

“Here’s this (market) that is huge, that is really important, that needs innovation, and there’s just nothing out there to sort of foster it,” said Doug Lynch, vice dean of Penn’s Graduate School of Education. “Let’s create a Silicon Valley around education.”

The U.S. Department of Education hopes to bolster entrepreneurship with its Investing in Innovation fund.

PHILADELPHIA – A movement is under way to make it easier for entrepreneurs to navigate the lucrative and sometimes-tricky education market and introduce new technology and products into classrooms.

An incubator would “create an ecosystem for education” that attracts entrepreneurs who might otherwise venture into more investment-friendly efforts, he said.

China’s AgBank up 2.2 percent in Hon – The North F 7月 21, 2010 No Comments

“I think our stock has always been very popular. It hasn’t been unpopular. You should know better than I what state the global capital markets are in,” Xiang told reporters in Hong Kong shortly after the listing ceremony on Friday.

While Chinese banks are considered the world’s strongest after avoiding the credit turmoil in the West, local authorities have warned about a possible spike in bad loans after last year’s lending boom unleashed by a government stimulus plan. The ratings agency Fitch warned earlier this week that some Chinese banks may be downplaying the scale of their lending with complex deals.

Priced at HK$3.20 ahead of the Hong Kong listing, the bank started trading at HK$3.25 and rose as high as HK$3.31 during the day before closing at HK$3.27.

Major foreign investors in the Hong Kong offering include some of the territory’s biggest tycoons and also Qatar Investment Authority ($2.8 billion), Kuwait Investment Authority ($800 million), Britain’s Standard Chartered Bank ($500 million), Dutch bank Radobank Nederland ($250 million), Australia’s Seven Group Holdings Ltd. ($250 million) and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings ($200 million).

But the limited gains paled in comparison to the double-digit increases posted by other major Chinese banks on their first trading days.

HONG KONG – Agricultural Bank of China’s shares rose 2.2 percent in their debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange Friday, improving on their performance in Shanghai a day earlier, as the rural lender rolled out an initial public offering worth up to $22.1 billion.

The bank has drawn strong backing from sovereign funds and other institutional investors still bullish about China’s prospects despite recent weakness in its stock markets.

“Most people were looking for 5 percent (in gains),” said Todd Martin, the bank’s Hong Kong-based Asia Equity Strategist. “The markets were looking for instant satisfaction, but people need to give it a week.”

“It’s a presentable result. It did not fall below its IPO price,” Lun said.

The head of a Hong Kong securities house said prices in Hong Kong were propped up by institutional investors who bought more shares. Fulbright Securities Ltd. General Manager Francis Lun said the stock did fine considering the low expectations after the Shanghai debut,The North Face, adding he expected greater interest in shares once the bank uses the proceeds from the IPO to improve its finances.

On Thursday, Chinese investors were lukewarm toward the bank on its first day in Shanghai, with the stock closing 1 percent above its IPO price at 2.71 yuan. It fell 0.4 percent on Friday, closing at 2.69 yuan.

“I’m very happy with the stock price today,” he said.

The bank sold 25.4 billion shares in Hong Kong and 22.2 billion shares in Shanghai, raising $19.2 billion. The total could rise to $22.1 billion if underwriters exercise an overallotment option by Aug. 5 to purchase additional shares, according to the prospectus. If that happens, the listing would eclipse the global IPO record of $21.9 billion set in October 2006 by another Chinese state-owned lender, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd.

The last of China’s “big four” state-owned commercial lenders to list, ABC is seen as weaker and less profitable than its peers,Tommy, given that it operates a costly network of far-flung rural branches and its non-performing loan ratio is higher than other major banks at about 3 percent. Bank executives, however, tout its strong presence in the countryside as an untapped engine for growth.

An analyst at French investment bank Societe Generale said ABC’s first-day performances in Hong Kong and Shanghai were disappointing, but added it was too early to pass judgment on the listings.

Agricultural Bank Chairman Xiang Junbo said Friday he was happy with the market reaction given the current conditions. The bank had little choice in the timing of the listing because Chinese regulators ordered banks to replenish capital after last year’s lending spree.

The Hong Kong IPO marked the international portion of the bank’s dual-listing. Unlike the Shanghai bourse, the stock exchange in this semiautonomous southern Chinese territory is open to foreign investors.

Chinese stock prices have also been weighed down by concerns about an overflow of new shares, down 25 percent from the start of the year.

Angela Lindvall—who’s balanced modeling with a steadfast commitment to environmental issues and awareness—recently signed on as the new face of John Hardy and the collaborator for its new sustainable jewelry collection, Hijau (”green” in Balinese). “My mission,” she says by phone from her farm in upstate New York, “was to take environmentalism to a new level—not the green-and-brown crunchy [style], more fluorescent pink graffiti—to really engage people in an inviting way.” Hence Hijau’s sparkling pink and orange stones and sliced-bamboo designs, a nod to Bali’s abundant bamboo crop.
